Desktop notifications can be both blessing and bane of one's existence. It calls attention to when you've received a new message in a program. It also... calls attention to a new message in a program. Too many of these stimuli at once feels overwhelming. Thankfully, Slack has the means to tailor when and what triggers a notification for you. This offers you control over what does and doesn't draw your attention away from the task at hand. It can be a direct message, a mention of your username, specific keywords, or a reminder set by yourself. There are several kinds of notifications - Slack's website mentions them all and how to set them, and you can check that out here.
